Madonna

Oil on mounted linen. Canvas prepared with two coats of acrylic “gesso” followed by two coats of oil based primer. Ground was then toned with burnt sienna.

Palette and Supplies:

  • Cadmium Red Medium
  • Quinacridone Magenta
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Transparent Orange
  • Phtalo Blue
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Burnt Sienna
  • Burnt Umber
  • Rich Gold
  • Chromatic Black
  • Flake White
  • Galkyd Slow Dry Medium (for the glazes)
  • Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits
  • Gamblin Cold Wax Medium

First Session

Sketch in pencil and then started immediately painting in the large areas of background color and flower.

Finished up the first session with the hooded coat, tee shirt and flower edges.

Second Session

Glazed quinacridone red over the phthalo blue background. Painted her face with the exception of the eyeglasses.

Third Session

Another layer of phthalo blue on the background. Phthalo blue into the shadows. Painted in the eyeglass frames and lens edges. Added a glaze of Dioxazine purple into the shadows on her face. Glazed Rich Gold over the skin and used it full strength on the edge of the flowers. Painted Chui.
