Medusa (after Caravaggio)

Inspired by Caravaggio’s “Medusa” which was also a self portrait.

Oil on acrylic primed wood panel. Ground was then toned with a combination of Hookers Green, Flake White and Chromatic Black.

  • Cadmium Red Medium
  • Quinacridone Red
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Raw Sienna
  • Raw Umber
  • Burnt Umber
  • Viridian Green
  • Hookers Green
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Flake White
  • Chromatic Black
  • Mars Black
  • Galkyd Slow Dry Medium
  • Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits

Design was sketched onto toned canvas with graphite pencil.

Started on the face. As usual lips and eyes first, so that I can “connect to the subject (i.e. myself).

End of first session

Then the rest of the face

End of second session

Started on the snakes, sketching them in using chromatic black. Added some shadows to the canvas.

Started to paint the snakes.

End of third session

Finished the snakes. Glazed some color into the portrait. Lightened the background to improve contrast.
