Inspired by Anthony Van Dyke’s portrait of Margaret Lemon, part of the Aso Tavitian recent donation to the Clark Art Museum.

This is more of a “Master Sketch” than a “Master Copy.” Executed as a sketch in oils and substituting Susan’s face for Margaret Lemon’s. The canvas was recycled from an older work of mine. A new coat of Burnt Sienna overlaid on the previous. Unfortunately, I rushed a bit and didn’t sand down the areas of thick paint from the prior work. This resulted in some coarse areas, especially on the face which interfered with the quality of the finished painting. Nevertheless, I think Susan is much more attractive than Margaret.
