Suzy (Oil version of encaustic)

Suzy (Oil version of encaustic)

I started from the same image of Suzy that I made into an encaustic. This time using oil on panel. I restricted myself to a very limited palette and worked to achieve contrast and a wider range of values than I typically have in the past.

Oil on acrylic primed wood panel. Ground was then toned with Burnt Sienna

Palette and Supplies:

  • Cadmium Red Medium
  • Quinacridone Red
  • Burnt Umber
  • Ultramarine Blue
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Flake White
  • Mars Black
  • Galkyd Neo Megilp Medium
  • Gamsol Odorless Mineral Spirits

Design was sketched onto toned canvas with graphite pencil.

Figure was then sketched in using a mixture of Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue for the darks and Flake White for the highlights. The background is built up of multiple alternating glazes of Burnt Umber and Ultramarine Blue.

The shadows are deepened and highlights intensified with additional layers of paint. An intermediate skin tone is scumbled in using a mix of Naples Yellow, Quinacridone Red and Flake White.

Complexity of the shadows is increased with Ultramarine Blue and Dioxazine Purple. Cadmium Red Medium scumbled in to give warmth to the skin mid-tones.
